Mutant (Species)

The X-Men as seen in the comics

Mutants (Or also known as Homo Superior) are people with abilities and powers yet are considered unnatural and freakish by their non-mutant peers and the general public. Each mutant's ability can vary as it depends, most can blend into society and appear normal but possess a power that isn't visible to anyone such as Jean, Kitty, Xavier, Logan, etc.

Other mutants however cannot blend into society due to their appearance and must either rely on being out in public when no-one is around, heavy bulk of clothing or by wearing an image inducer such as Kurt. Despite Hank in his beast form appearing blue, he does not wear an image inducer but instead prefers to wear a long trench coat and fedora when outside to avoid unwanted attention.

Due to possessing some form of power, most mutants feel the need to show their superiority over those weaker than them whether mutant or not such as Erik who wanted mutantkind to rule after he had seen the treatment of people during his time of growing up in World War Two. Despite this, there are those that believe there can be peaceful coexistence between both mutants and humans such as Xavier and his X-Men but those that want to disrupt the peace such as Magneto and the Brotherhood or Acolytes.

However, there are some non-mutants who were still friends with the X-Men even after knowledge of mutants became known to the public with the most notable ally being that of Amanda who was romantically interested in Kurt even after seeing his blue self and was hoping people could know the real him instead of the disguise he wore when attending school. There are also some factions or organisations who wish to capture mutants believing that they cause trouble within society with the military at one point capturing those that failed to escape the Institute once it was surrounded.

Even though public knowledge of them only came about during that of present day, one such mutant was discovered over three-thousand years ago in Ancient Egypt and was known as En Sabah Nur although often known by his other name of Apocalypse.

Other mutants who possess extreme form of powers are referred to as Morlocks but do not live on the surface out of fear that the humans above will come after them.

X-gene[]

Those that possess any form of ability, typically have what is known as an X-gene which can either trigger on its own at any age of be forced to trigger by any means such as when Erik triggered Kurt's gene when he was a baby.
