"If I don't say you, will I get thrown out of this jet?"
Rogue answering Logan

Premise[]

Scott and Jean prepare for their geology club excursion, but Mystique has different plans in mind, replacing Jean with Rogue in an attempt to put further distance between her and the X-Men. In the end, Rogue defects and chooses to join the X-Men.

Summary[]

One night, the X-Men infiltrate a base with Kitty and Evan going ahead and partnering up to take out the guard on patrol as Kurt teleports Scott inside. In the facility, Jean uses her telekinesis to lower the two as to not trigger the alarms that are on the floor, as they continue inside, Scott and Kurt venture on in order to locate and free Storm who is chained to a post and covered in a cloak but as Scott advances, the figure rises and absorbs his powers revealing it to be Rogue instead. Scott, surprised, shuts down the simulation as Xavier enters the room and insists that the simulation is to only be ended if anyone is hurt but Scott rebuttals and claims Rogue was never planned to be part of training only for Xavier to admit Rogue was included as an element of surprise and that surprises are to be expected on their actual missions, he then allows training to be concluded for the morning as the team have school, as they leave, Scott reminds Jean that they have to help load the bus for their trip.

On their way to school, Jean questions Scott about his negative response to having Rogue in their training, Scott answers saying it does not make sense to have her as an opponent if in reality they want her to be part of the X-Men. As the two continue to walk on, unbeknownst to them, Mystique appears from the shadows of a doorway and smiles after hearing Scott's answer.

Inside the gym, Rogue overhears Scott and Jean who talk about how fun the trip will be. As she watches on, Rogue feels slight jealously and is confronted by Mystique, who is in her Ms. Darkhölme form, she states that Scott will never be friends with her as Rogue claims she is not interested in him anyways. Mystique then admits she knows about Scott and Jean's conversation about Rogue in the training simulations, the latter becomes upset and questions about the situation, Mystique then tells her to remember who her true friends are and tells Rogue she hopes she enjoys the trip before dropping a backpack on the floor and leaving the room.

As Scott and Jean load up the bus, their teacher walks over and tells Jean she isn't allowed on the trip due to having too many absent days, Jean pleads for her teacher to call Xavier as proof that all her days off were approved but is told that it is too late and instead says Jean already has a replacement, Scott, upset over the issue, asks who the replacement student is but is told that it is a new student. Scott looks over and notices Rogue getting onto the bus realising she is the replacement, Rogue smiles at him and gets on the bus.

At the Institute, Erik arrives to confront Xavier. Erik says the X-Men seem to be doing well but Xavier admits he is keeping a secret from them and that he does not trust them with the truth just yet. Erik then ends their confrontation by slamming his old friend into the nearby glass doors.

As the bus continues its ascend up the mountain, it begins snowing and the teacher states they will have to turn around due to it starting to become too much to drive through, the bus soon begins losing control and almost goes over the edge of the cliff. After seeing nobody is watching him, Scott removes his glasses and blasts a trench which stops the bus though Rogue is the only one to notice. Despite being stopped, the bus becomes stuck. Seeing no other option, Rogue suggests the class head the rest of the way to the caves by using the snow mobiles so they can wait out the harsh weather conditions, something which everyone agrees to. Outside, Rogue challenged Scott to a race but almost causes everyone to go over the cliff, Paul then calls Rogue wild for her actions and states she did not care for her classmates safety. Rogue wins the race and gets to the cave first as she tells Scott there is no trophy for coming second place.

Back at the Institute, Xavier talks with Logan about how their students are still unaware that Principal Darkhölme and Mystique are one in the same. Logan insists they tell the truth but Xavier doubles down on his earlier statement explaining that he is still unsure that the X-Men are ready for the truth. Storm walks into the room with Jean to explain that the students on the trip are in danger due to a blizzard, Xavier then questions why Jean is not on the trip as she tells them that she was pulled from the trip so Rogue could go in her place instead.

Inside the cave, the class listen in as their teacher gives them a Geology lesson as Rogue strays away from everyone. Scott, noticing that Rogue is leaving, follows after her, he soon loses track of her but almost falls from a ledge, Rogue reappears to help but demands answers under the belief she thinks the X-Men want to target her as Scott insists all he and the X-Men want is Rogue's friendship and trust but still does not trust him, she goes to walk away but Paul appears claiming the class was looking for them, Rogue then mockingly bets that the X-Men don't train by fighting Paul.

Amused by that statement, Paul turns into Mystique and claims she would lose the bet. Scott, who remained with Rogue, watches in horror as he discovers who his principal really is. As he watches, Mystique further taunts the X-Man by stating that Xavier always knew and that he was just hiding the truth from his students and then shoves Scott off the ledge as Rogue goes to save him but is too late, she then angrily turns to Mystique demanding answers as the latter claims all that has happened so far was done to protect her from the X-Men and their lies but she is grabbed by Rogue who had removed her gloves so she could absorb her powers. As Rogue gets flashbacks, Mystique passes out and Rogue talks to herself as she apologises despite Scott not being there.

Down below on a ledge, Scott attempts to pull himself back up only to notice Mystique coming towards him and becomes alarmed only to discover that is is Rogue in the form of Mystique. Above, the two notice the real Mystique trying to drop a boulder down onto them, the two then fall further and land in a river but Scott saves himself and Rogue by moving to a overhang, the rock then breaks as Scott injures his head. Rogue then apologises once more as she admits she knows the truth, Scott then passes out as Mystique watches from another ledge.

In the Blackbird, Xavier, Logan and Storm fly towards the mountains in an attempt to find Scott. Meanwhile, Mystique then turns into a wolf to confront Scott and Rogue again. Not wanting Mystique to get close to the still hurt Scott, Rogue pulls him away. Xavier then telepathically contacts Scott and admits it may be hard to find him due to the snow. Scott then tells Rogue the X-Men are on their way to find them but will struggle to locate them. As Mystique grows closer, Rogue takes off Scott's glasses and orders him to open his eyes, Scott does so as a red optic blast goes upward which the Blackbird uses as a signal. As Mystique almost reaches the two, Rogue ends up absorbing Scott's powers and uses them to fire Mystique off the cliff, the latter falls only to morph into a bird and fly away. The Blackbird team locate Rogue and Scott and pick the two up just as the bridge they were on collapses.

On the jet, Scott's injuries are tended to by Storm as Logan speaks to Rogue questioning which side she is on, Rogue, scared, asks if she will be thrown from the Blackbird if she does not answer with the X-Men but is assured by Logan that it is not their style, he then tells her that the team either have or have not got Rogue's trust, she answers that they do and is welcome to the team. At the Institute, the X-Kids confront Xavier about the information he held from them, Xavier instead asks Rogue for her opinion but she insists that it is not her place to answer as Kitty assures her that she is part of their family now, Rogue admits that honesty is important as Xavier assures his team he will try to be more honest within the future.

Quote[]

Logan: Where's your allegiance, kid, us or them?
Rogue: If I don't say you, will I get thrown out of this jet?
Logan: Nope, not our style. We've either earned your trust by now or we haven't.
Rogue: (After a brief thought) You.
Logan: Welcome to the X-Men.

Notes[]

  • Rogue permanently joins the X-Men.
  • From this episode on, all of the X-Men would know Mystique's alternate identity as their principal, Raven Darkhölme.
  • Since Rogue absorbs Mystique's memories, the former learns her true relationship with Mystique and Kurt.
  • This is the first time Scott's eyes are shown to be blue.
  • This episodes shows that Erik and Xavier have history with one another.

Goofs[]

  • When Scott arrives at the cave, he is wearing gloves but after that they are not seen again.
  • Part of Kurt's sleeve on his over-shirt [with his inducer] changes colors near the end of the episode. The stripe on his sleeves are indigo than olive green than a dull pinkish color.
  • The teacher states while in the cave that metamorphic rocks are made with heat, extreme pressure, or chemical change. However, heat and extreme pressure both cause igneous rock, not metamorphic.

Trivia[]

  • In this episode Mystique transforms into a wolf. In the original comics, she cannot take on the guise of non-humanoid forms. The idea of her morphing into animals would be used for future episodes.
  • The green outfit that Rogue's wears during the training session is her original green outfit from the comics.
  • At one point, the students' teacher tells them that he better not see any "Game Toy" during the trip. The "Game Toy" is a parody of the "Game Boy".
